Jo Fleming

For me painting is a way of contemplating the natural world and my relationship to it.

I was born in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, a pristine environment threatened by coal removal. My family migrated to Northern Virginia, near Washington, DC. I studied art and received a BFA from The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, Maryland.

Variations of form and color, patterns of growth and the relationship of the natural environment impacted by human activity are the inspiration for my paintings. I am fascinated by the ever-increasing presence of the man-made component in the rural landscape as well as the vital importance of the natural element in the urban setting. My paintings are compositions about the intersection of the two worlds.

My instinct to express nature at full size has led me to a modular approach, incorporating print and mixed media materials into my paintings. My work has been shown regionally in solo exhibitions and is placed in private as well as commercial collections.
