Gary Bowling focuses his oil paintings on the landscapes around his Missouri and Kentucky studios, the idea of the landscapes as a “place where we might escape, but where we also discover we don’t quite belong.” Painting the landscape at a remove lends it, in his words, “some almost imperceptible strangeness that subconsciously keeps us alert.”
