Luzhen Qiu is a multidisciplinary Chinese American artist working across painting, drawing, and mixed media. Ode to a Nightingale I reflects Qiu’s long-held fascination with the Great Lakes since moving to Michigan in the 1990s. She writes, “Rocks were believed to have a concentrated amount of natural energy and symbolized the dwelling places of the Daoist immortals… In my work, I build my own rockeries with many monotypes I created with sumi ink and watercolor, cutting the drawings or monotypes piece by piece and reassembling them into collages on wood panels.” The work embodies Qiu’s broader practice of removing images and materials from their original contexts and rearranging them into new forms. Qiu earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Wayne State University and is based in Metro Detroit.
