Much of my life’s work is about painting the beauty I encounter in everyday life, finding the lovely amidst the mundane. I don’t want to go about so distracted by the to-do lists I’m forever obeying and miss the beauty that is out there along the way. Such is the case with this show of my paintings. These are the common, everyday places and scenes I see as I go about my life… I live and walk around in Brookline. I work and walk around in the Fenway. There is plenty to complain about in both places. Of course, I see that.
There is also incredible beauty. It’s there every day, available to those who have eyes to see. I’m fortunate enough to have those eyes, now and then. I also have these hands that like to apply paint to canvas so that some of that beauty can be magically captured, pasted, transferred… out of the atmosphere and reality of what I see in everyday life, onto a canvas that will last much longer than I ever will. It is such a joy to me when I’m actually successful, when looking at one of my paintings evokes a sense of that time and place, that beauty, that wonder, that reality… yet it’s just paint on canvas. That’s like magic.
My children, gifted artists themselves, call what I do Optimistic Realism. Ok, guilty.
