James Cathey

Widely known as the premier photojournalist of the golden age of rodeo, James Cathey positioned himself close to the action in the arena using a single-shot camera with a disposable flash bulb. In one shutter click, he captured the rough ride or toss of a rope with a unique talent and sense of timing. “A lot of things have gone into the business of presenting the American Quarter Horse to the world, the most important of which is the photography of James Cathey…Working constantly with camera and typewriter, he has done the job of a true craftsman, presenting pictures of near perfect quality and concept, strengthened by knowledge that can only be gained through years of tireless effort,” a writer for Hoofs & Horns magazine said.
