Jessica Rohrer’s meticulously rendered, intimately scaled paintings of suburban streets, interiors, and still lifes address themes of identity, memory, and our desire to control the surrounding environment. Referencing video and photographic drone images, she portrays a bird’s eye view of her neighborhood in New Jersey, varying the distance to capture close-ups of swimming pools or patio furniture and broader views to emphasize the patterns of rooftops and backyard divisions. With their abundance of detail but lack of figural presence and cultural specificity, Rohrer believes her work occupies an ambiguous space “somewhere between the individual and broader issues of identity.”
