Olivier Khouadiani is an Ivorian documentary photographer based in Abidjan. Abissa is part of Khouadiani’s photographic series about the concept of dance. It depicts the traditional ceremony commemorating the new year for the Nzima community in Côte d’Ivoire. This festival of thanksgiving honors their ancestors—in other words, a celebration of “sharing and transmission between the old and new generations”—and features a rhythmic dance alongside sounds of the tam-tam percussion instrument.
