Heather Hietala

Heather Hietala works with clay, steel, thread, upcycled glass, wood, and wire to create vessels. “The form of the vessel conveys function, symbolism, and metaphor…[it] is my point of departure to explore an emotion, an idea and a response to a specific incident or period of time,” she says. Her clay pieces are formed by imprinting and hardening slabs to a fabric-like texture, sewing them together, patching cracks with clay scraps, reinforcing with steel welding rod, and glazing and kiln firing. “I am concerned with memory and associations concerning journey, identity and a sense of time and place…The dialogue between individual pieces, groupings, the environment and the viewer are integral to my work. ”
