Andy Sweet’s brightly hued, dynamic photographs honor a rich but often overlooked period of south Florida’s cultural heritage. With longtime friend Gary Monroe, he established the South Beach Photographic Project to document the area’s elderly Jewish community comprised primarily of New York transplants and Holocaust survivors. Sweet embraced the creative possibilities of color imagery while adopting a snapshot aesthetic, taking seemingly unmediated (though carefully composed) photographs of his subjects. Over the course of five years, Sweet created a vibrant body of work that is life-affirming, tender, and joyous.
