William Kienbusch

Best known for his semi-abstract landscapes, William A. Kienbusch was deeply influenced by the coastal terrain and colors of Stonington, Maine, that captured the “inner reality of the world of nature.” After photographing and sketching the pine trees, buoys, and shacks of Maine’s summer shoreline, Kienbusch would spend time during the winter painting his geometrically formulated landscapes on canvas, using his sketches and photographs as reference. In the 1960s, he implemented looser brushwork to portray the dynamic movement and rhythms of natural forces in his compositions.
