William Christenberry

William Christenberry grew up in Hale County, Alabama. Since 1961, he has returned there each summer, revisiting the same places in forgotten corners of the region. Chronicling the passage of time, Christenberry documents how the places of his youth have changed through photos, paintings and sculptures. The Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington recently featured a yearlong retrospective of Christenberry’s work, while the Aperture Gallery in New York hosted an exhibit just of his photography. Christenberry’s work belongs to numerous collections, including the Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, Mass.; the Baltimore Museum of Art; the Center for Creative Photography, Tucson; the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; the High Museum of Art, Atlanta; t the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the National Museum of American Art, Washington, D.C.; and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
