Tyler Mitchell is a photographer and filmmaker who explores and documents “a new aesthetic of Blackness.” His work creates narratives about Black beauty and desire, blending historical reflection with “fictionalized moments for the imagined future.” Mitchell’s representations of Black life emphasize “play, empowerment, and self-determination.” He was the first Black photographer to shoot a cover of American Vogue, featuring the singer Beyonce for the September 2018 issue. The photograph was later acquired by the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.
