Timothy Klunder (b. 1965, Milwaukee, Wisconsin), a student of Keith Jacobshagen’s, received a Master’s in Fine Art from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. The university’s Sheldon Museum bought two of his large works for their permanent collection while he was still in school. Omaha’s Gallery 72 sponsored a solo exhibition for Klunder in November 1999.
Artist Statement
I am an active and exhibiting artist whose focus is primarily landscape, both rural and at times urban. Most of my images contain a mixture of man-made and natural motifs with a general focus on agrarian subjects. I have always been interested in the inherent beauty of nature and the working relationship between man and the environment. My paintings are executed in acrylic on hardboard, but I will occasionally work on paper and canvas. I paint them in a broad variety of styles and proportions. My work is representational in the canon of the Western European tradition. Some of these specific influences include such seventeenth-century Dutch luminaries as Jacob van Ruisdael and Philips Koninck, as well as nineteenth-century English masters JMW Turner and John Constable. I am also drawn to the Hudson River School of late nineteenth-century American painters. Keith Jacobshagen, Harold Gregor, William Beckman, and Wolf Kahn are some of my contemporary American influences. I use a variety of sources to formulate my paintings, including photographs, small drawings and watercolors. Memory fragments play a vital role in their creation.
I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 1993 and Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1998. My work is in some noteworthy collections, including the family collection of Mrs. Warren Buffet, the Museum of Nebraska Art, The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden, The Great Plains Gallery on the UNL campus and the corporate headquarters of Pioneer Hybrid.
