Born in Washington, D.C., Sara Bartle remained there, 1894-1931, during most of her career as a painter of miniature portraits in oil on ivory and an illustrator. She studied art in New York with Carroll Beckwith and at the Art Students Leagues in New York and Washington DC. She also painted and studied in Europe.
She was a member of the Washington Water Color Club and exhibited there as well as the Art Institute of Chicago in 1916. Unique to her portraits were landscape backgrounds.
