Samuel Emmons Brown was born in Newton Center, Massachusetts,
the son of a distinguished minister, scholar, and educator.
Upon completing studies at Harvard University (Cambridge,
Massachusetts) in three years, Brown earned a Master of Arts
degree from the University of Chicago (Illinois). He then decided
to become an artist, and attended the Massachusetts Normal
Art School, where he met fellow student Florence Ivy, whom
he married. Brown did commercial work and painted in Boston
(Massachusetts) before the couple moved to Westport, Connecticut,
in 1923. Later they lived in nearby Wilton, but Brown kept
his studio in Westport. He taught art classes at the Women’s Club
and painted portraits.
