Russ Gilbert began his photographic career as a high school yearbook staff photographer, later graduating from Northern Arizona University with a degree in commercial photography. After graduation, he collaborated with Gene Balzer, a professor at the university, to photograph sites in Canyonlands National Park in Utah. The trip began a seventeen-year partnership between the two, during which they photographed ancient dwellings across the American West. In recent years, Gilbert has shifted to using super large format cameras. His work has been exhibited across the United States.
