Based in Los Angeles, California, Raffi Kalenderian creates intricate painted and drawn portraits of his friends directly from life and from photographs. His paintings and drawings convey both an intimate moment between artist and sitter and a dreamlike detachment that places his subjects in a peculiar equilibrium between reality and illusion. The artist seems to balance the task of faithfully portraying his subject with fully experiencing the sounds, colors, and emotions before him.
Kalenderian graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from UCLA in 2004. He has had solo exhibitions at Galerie Peter Kilchman, Zurich, Switzerland, at the Black Dragon Society, Los Angeles. Kalenderian had his second solo exhibition at Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects in June 2014.
