Greek-born Nefeli Massia is a multi-media artist whose paintings, drawings, and installations suggest a tension between earthy, ritualistic qualities, and an other-worldly, even sacred, element. As one reviewer notes, “Massia reaches out into deep space to embrace the cosmological dimensions of time; past, present and future. Her work, both abstract and theoretical, probes the recesses of the psychological space of our physiology, the brain, to explore our sense of self. Notions of identity, consciousness, humanity, existence and meaning are the keys to her ongoing search for knowledge. Through large-scale, multi-layered installations or elegiac, translucent light-boxes, she creates images that seep beyond the frame and illuminate the wall. Nefeli Massia’s work was included in the traveling exhibition The Missing Piece: Artists Consider the Dalai Lama organized in 2006 by the UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History, Los Angeles, which continues to travel the globe; and the 2008 solo show A Telluric Path: The Art of Nefeli Massia at the Katzen Arts Center at American University in Washington, D.C. She is based in Baltimore.
