Lordy Rodriguez was born in Quezon City, Manila, Philippines, and spent his formative years in Texas. He graduated from the University of Houston in 1997 and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of Visual Arts, New York City. He lives in the San Francisco Bay area, California. Rodriguez sees cartography as a starting point in his highly personal experience with physical landscape. Brilliantly colored inks wash over topographical lines and areas creating invented regions of the earth. Informed by road trips across the American terrain, he creates places that can and do exist but originate in his perception of place. The artist focuses on what can identify place and those associations that make up a national identity.
