Julia Bland’s geometric compositions are created through an intuitive and cyclical
approach to assembly and dis-assembly. By weaving, cutting, dying, sewing, burning
and painting, the surface becomes a visible record of her evolving, multifaceted
process. “Making is not really about following a certain process or tradition,” Bland
writes, “but about the way all things change.” Images emerge as formal evolutions
embedded in the material structure. Trees, bodies, mountains, hands, bridges, and planets come in and out of focus. In the rhythm of making and unmaking, bland develops the structures, symbols, and patterns that bind disparate elements into a whole.
Bland lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She has had solo exhibitions at Derek
Eller Gallery, Helena Anrather, and On Stellar Rays in New York City, and at Andrew
Rafacz Gallery in Chicago. She holds a BFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School
of Design and a MFA in Painting and Printmaking from the Yale School of Art. Her
forthcoming projects include solo exhibitions at Guesthouse in Jackson Hole and at The
Landing Gallery in Los Angeles. She is represented by Derek Eller Gallery in NYC.
