JOSCELYN GARDNER is a visual artist working primarily with printmaking and multimedia installation whose practice probes colonial material culture found in Caribbean archives in order to explore her (white) Creole identity from a postcolonial feminist perspective. She was born in Barbados and lived and worked there until 2000 when she moved to Canada. She currently teaches in the School of Contemporary Media at Fanshawe College, London, Ontario, and works as an artist between Canada and the Caribbean.
Gardner’s work has been exhibited in solo exhibitions in the USA, Canada, and the Caribbean, and she has represented Barbados at several international exhibitions including the Sao Paulo Biennials (1994, 1996) and printmaking biennials across Europe and Latin America. Recent group exhibitions include Stains on my Chintz (Kolkata, India, 2010), Global Caribbean (Miami, FL, 2009-10), Rockstone and Bootheel (Real Art Ways, Hartford, CT, 2009-10), Black Diaspora Art (National Art Gallery, Barbados, 2009), Atlantide Caraibe (Fondation Clemente, Martinique, 2008), and Infinite Island (Brooklyn Museum, New York, 2007). She holds an MFA from the University of Western Ontario and a BFA & BA from Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario.
