Joan Belmar

Joan Belmar is best known for his unique method of three-dimensional painting. Combining painting and collage techniques with painted Mylar and paper strips in circles and curvilinear shapes, Belmar creates transparent variations, “as light and the viewer move in relation to the work.” The transparent, luminous materials invite the viewer to draw close and observe the many layers within.

Born in Santiago, Chile, Belmar started painting professionally in Spain before moving to Washington, D.C. His work has been widely exhibited across the United States and is included in prominent collection like the Zillman Art Museum at the University of Maine, Bangor.
