Friedrich Werner

German artist Friedrich Berhard Werner traveled throughout Europe between 1727 and 1736, drawing profiles of towns and buildings for Augsburg publishers. The fact that he worked for several publishers at the same time cut down the cost. According to scholar Angelika Marsch, who studied Werner extensively, the artist made sketches during the daytime, and reworked them into finished drawings in the size of the final print. He did this either at night, at whatever inn in which he was currently lodging, or back in his workshop during the winter, when he was not traveling.
