Using a palette knife and paintbrushes, Frederick Hurd creates oil paintings similar in style to California Impressionism—a twentieth-century art movement modeled after French Impressionism that “showcased the atmosphere and emotion of scenery.” His earlier work is inspired by the people, landscapes and buildings that he encountered in travels across the world, while more recent paintings focus on the interaction of people within urban environments, using combinations of contemporary and antique photographic sources.
