Francoise Gilot

Although widely known as the romantic partner and muse of Pablo Picasso, Françoise Gilot was an established artist when she met the then-sixty-one-year-old Cubist pioneer in 1943. Throughout her career, Gilot worked with both the abstract and figurative, developing a distinct language of form that reveals an enduring preoccupation with both the personal and universal forces of nature, time, space, and mythology. A self-defined “color painter,” Gilot liberally used vibrant hues to evoke emotion in her works.
