Ewa Bathelier’s experience as a costume and set designer is evident in her large-scale acrylic paintings of dancewear. Having spent her adult life in France, the artist focuses on the attire of its famous cultural export, ballet. Bathelier depicts the light and free-floating primavera dresses, leotards, and tutus in dramatic relief against monochrome backgrounds. She especially enjoys the process of painting tutus, as she favors using broad, gestural strokes to evoke the many layers of projecting fabric.
