With an interest in American Modernism, Henri Rousseau, Op Art, as well as Japanese printmaking, Emily Joyce’s current unique silkscreen prints which are essentially printed paintings are composed of small individual units (an eye, a hand, etc.), repeated many times to create a pattern. With these works, the imagery is constantly moving between unit, pattern and image. The tension between those three ways of seeing an image at the same time shifts the viewer’s experience of the work. At a close distance the works are sensual: the way the ink sits in the paper and the details of the imagery. Stepping back from the work one is aware of a complex pattern. And still at a far distance the image becomes optical or mediative.
Emily Joyce has been exhibiting her paintings, prints and wall-installations for the past 12 years throughout the United States and in Europe. Solo exhibitions of her work were held at Sara Meltzer Gallery, New York, Inman Gallery, Houston, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Acuna-Hansen Gallery, Los Angeles as well as other institutions. Some group shows took place at Palais de Tokyo, Paris, Park Projects, Los Angeles, LACE, Los Angeles, Caren Golden Gallery, New York, Glassbox Gallery, Paris, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Joyce has been awarded residencies at the Harwood Museum, Taos, New Mexico, UCROSS Foundation, Clearmont, Wyoming, Palais de Tokyo, Paris, France, and Core Program, Houston, Texas. She received her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and studied at the Glasgow School of Art.
