Dorothy Faison was born in 1955 in New York. She had the opportunity to travel the world – Costa Rica (1962-64); Bolivia (1965-1968); Hawaii (1968-1973); Japan (1973); Scotland (1974-76); Hawaii (1976-77); Los Angeles (1977-79); and Hawaii (1980 to present). She took the following courses: Art History and Japanese at Sophia University, Tokyo, Japan (1973); Drawing, Painting, Art History, Chinese and French at Edinburgh College of Art and the University of Edinburgh, Scotland (1974-76). She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in drawing and painting at the University of Hawaii, Manoa (1977), and a Master of Fine Arts degree in intermedia at the Otis Art Institute, Los Angeles, California (1979). Faison has received the following awards: NASL Career Competition in Drawing, First Place – Hawaii & Fifth Place U.S.A. (1981); Honolulu Academy of Arts Catherine E.B. Cox Award for Excellence in the Visual Arts (1989); The Contemporary Museum First Biennial Artist (1993); Western States Regional NEA Fellowship in Painting (1994); Hawaii State Foundation on Culture & The Arts – Individual Artist Fellowship (1995); and Melusine Award for Painting, Honolulu Academy of Arts & Purchase Awards (2006, 2002, 1993).
