Acclaimed Brooklyn painter Derek Buckner studied at Vassar College (Poughkeepsie, New York) and the Art Students League of New York City, before receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois. Buckner also participated in the stone carving program in Carrara, Italy, sponsored by the Boston Museum School. He has had solo exhibitions since 1996 across the U.S. and in the U.K. and Korea, and his work is in numerous private and corporate collections.
Buckner’s current work focuses on the industrial landscape in the area near his new studio in the Brooklyn neighborhood of the historic Gowanis Canal, where factory rooftops and bridges are seen from a new vantagepoint. Buckner’s rooftop view, combined with his treatment of light, tonality, and color, gives a dramatic quility and vastness to his evocative, painterly landscapes.
