David Brewster

David Brewster is a Vermont-based alla prima oil painter who chronicles the use and disuse of spaces, the forgotten and the mundane, our collective impact on the natural and manufactured environment. His paintings, executed on-site in a single session, comprise an artistic language of the dynamic landscape.

Born in Baltimore in 1960, Brewster earned his MFA in Philadelphia in 1988, and since then has been invited to paint, teach, study, and exhibit throughout New England and the Northeast, along the North American Atlantic Seaboard, in the high desert of Eastern California, as well as in Brittany, France, and County Mayo, Ireland. Living in Vermont for the past ten years, Brewster has painted the New England landscape, building a strong relationship with its agriculture, its cities, its machinery, its development, and sometimes its decline and abandonment.

David Brewster has received grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and the Taconic Berkshire Foundation, and is currently working on commissions from the WP Carey School of Business at Johns Hopkins University and from the Vermont Arts Council. He’s represented by Walter Wickiser Gallery, New York, NY; Gross McCleaf Gallery, Philadelphia, PA; and C. Grimaldis Gallery, Baltimore, MD.
