Artist, director, and brand consultant Dario Calmese finds himself at the “nexus of art, fashion, and academia.” Utilizing his knowledge of “movement, gesture, and psychology” when portraying complex subjects, Calmese creates photographic narratives that “explore history, race, class, and what it means to be human.” He embraces the role of storyteller in his photographs: “I learned we must bring our full selves to whatever space we occupy. Culture does not happen in a vacuum, and neither does art or fashion (or business, design, etc.). Telling our own stories had long been a part of my practice.” He was the first Black photographer to shoot for Vanity Fair, with his 2020 portrait of Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis.
