Clare Rojas

Clare Rojas challenges the idea that abstract art cannot tell a story. Her work assiduously explores the human impulse toward narrative. As a visual artist, she reduces the composition to its essence, its fundamental constituents of line and color. As a musician, she is a minimalist as well—each song a pared-down melody lasting only a few minutes. In both arenas, Rojas distills her creative expression into elegant, if terse, utterances. Individually, her works are concise and controlled; together, they reveal a theoretical artist dedicated to experimentation, rigorous in her approach, with a personal language of abstraction.

Rojas earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, and her Master of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois. She is the recipient of numerous awards including a Project Space Residency and Tournesol Award from Headlands Center for the Arts in Sausalito, California; a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Grant; a Eureka Fellowship from the Fleishhacker Foundation; and an Artadia Award.
