Christian Barthelmess (b. 1854 Klingenberg, Germany; d. 1906, Fort Keogh, Montana) A musician with the army, Barthelmess began photographing in Ft. Apache, Arizona in 1876 and continued while stationed at other forts in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Montana. For thirty years he made views of Army life and Indians, casually and formally posing pictures of ice skaters, fishermen, Indian soldiers on the march, groups of officers and scouts. Huffman also printed a good number of prints from Barthelmess’s negatives.
