I am interested in producing giant bronze sculptures that place insects, fish, and birds in fantasy situations that do not represent their natural behavior. For example, the grasshopper is a garden and agricultural pest that destroys plants and crops. However, my giant bronze fantasy PEACE KEEPER grasshopper is presented as a lover of peace carrying an olive branch while dressed in his finest plumage of etched and iridescent wings. Another example, the Tiger Beetle, is a small predator that eats other insects. My giant bronze fantasy Tiger Beetle is shown as a Knight in Shining Armor presenting himself to the Crown dressed in his finest polished and iridescent armor.
I am also interested in the beauty of industrial designs. The early steam locomotive drive system is an example of a simple but elegant design solution. In my bronze sculpture CROSSHEAD I show the drive system of a Mogul steam locomotive that was built in the late 1800’s. I am directing the viewer’s attention to the beautiful design solution of using a crosshead that allowed the double-acting steam cylinder to turn the drive wheels using eccentric connecting rods.
I was born in Washington, DC, and earned a BS degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Maryland. I later earned an MS degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the University of Washington, and an MBA from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
I started my art career as a painter and photographer. However, I moved to sculpture in the late 1980s with classes at Amarillo College and the University of Cincinnati. After moving back to the Washington, DC, area, I studied sculpture at the Corcoran School of Art. After retirement my wife and I built a sculpture studio behind our house in Silver Spring, Maryland.
In 1996 I started exhibiting my work in Washington, DC. Other exhibitions followed in Anchorage, Alaska; Abingdon, McLean, and Herndon, Virginia; Mesa, Arizona; Rockville and Chestertown, Maryland; Atlantic City, New Jersey; New Hope, New Town, and West Chester, Pennsylvania; New Bern, North Carolina; and Kiev, Ukraine. My work is included in several major collections.
