At Brooklyn College Brodsky studied with Ad Reinhardt and Burgoyne Diller. Even before she graduated in1965, her watercolors were included in a 1963 World House Gallery exhibition (Madison Avenue) which also showcased Paul Klee and Vassily Kandinsky. Since then, her work has received many accolades from both critics and peers. After seeing an exhibition of Beverly’s paintings in1980, Elaine de Kooning wrote: I’m impressed with the intensity of the imagery…indications of a magnificent energy level.
Brodsky has also been awarded several painting fellowships and grants. These include The Connecticut Commission On The Arts (1979), The New York Foundation For The Arts Fellowship (2000), and The Vermont Studio Center Fellowship (2010). In 2004 she was The Adolf and Esther Gottlieb Foundation Grant finalist, and a grant recipient in 2012.
In 1977 she won the Randolff Caldecott Medal for her Illustrated book, The Golem.
In 2001 Sotheby’s in New York exhibited her paintings for the special exhibition, Buying Time,Nourishing Excellence, in connection with her NYFA Fellowship. In an accompanying catalog, William Stover stated: Brodsky’s large scale brightly hued canvases engage viewers on a visceral level, directing them to the artist’s intuitive world. Brodsky was also included at the Whitney Museum of American Art Exhibition: The American Century Part 11:2000. At Lake Placid, her work was exhibited during the 1980 Olympics where she received a National Fine Arts Committee Medal by a panel of critics and curators including Lisa Lyons and Henry Geldzahler.
She was also commissioned by The National Endowment For The Arts to create a poster design for performances of The Beach House in Lake Placid and at The Long Wharf Theater in Connecticut. In 1988 The Jewish Museum included her work in a large exhibition called Danger, Deliverance, and Art. In 1990 Brodsky was a resident in Germany where her works on paper were exhibited in several galleries. Her abstract paintings were also published by Juni Magazin Fur Kultur & Politik in the 1991 Edition of Eighteen From New York. The artist/curator, Clemens Weiss stated: Her paintings grow from a personal reflection…as well as artistic imagination.
After a one-person exhibition in 2006 at Etra Fine Art(Miami), the gallery also featured her work in the 2007 Palm Beach Art Fair, and at the Barbara Paci Gallery in Pietrasanta, Italy. Brodsky’s work exhibited at Galerie 0-68 in the Netherlands, (June 2013), was recently featured in The Netherland’s June Edition of KunstKrant(2013),and reviewed in Art Alert.(2013) May/June Edition. Brodsky has been teaching painting and color theory at Parsons The New School University for many years.
