Water, with its qualities of reflection, transparency, and movement has been the focus of April’s work for decades. She was born in Santa Monica, California and grew up by the Pacific Ocean. She studied painting and printmaking at UCLA and Art Center College of Design and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Colorado, Boulder. For close to twenty years she has lived in Oregon and hiked and kayaked its coastline, creeks and rivers.
Her work has also led her to become involved in water issues. Her “Sheros” series of paintings of Dr. Helen Caldicott, Dr. Wangari Maathai, Dr. Vandana Shiva and Maude Barlow are of women who are working to protect the watersheds of the world and assure that water remains in the “commons” for all people.
April Waters’s paintings are in the collections of Oregon State University, Salem Hospital, Discovery Village Children’s Museum, Mount Angel Abbey Library, Slocum Orthopedic Center and the new Riverbend Peace Health Hospital in Springfield, Oregon, as well as numerous other private and public locations. In 2003, she had a one-woman show in the Oregon Governor’s office. She was selected as a National Park, Artist in Residence for the Crater Lake Centennial Celebration and exhibition at the Schneider Museum of Art in Ashland. Most recently, her painting, “One Water” was purchased by Oregon’s “Percent for Art” program for display at the Health and Wellness Center of Western State University.
