Fascinated by consumer culture, the media, and fame, Andy Warhol became one of the most important artists of the twentieth century, creating the prototype of the artist as a social celebrity, successful business person, and mass producer. He derived his subject matter from popular culture and established himself as a prime mover in the pop art movement with his paintings of Campbell’s Soup cans. Using cultural icons such as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Warhol celebrated the transience of taste and fame.
