I’ve been making fabric portraits of people and objects in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1988. I use fabric as a medium of expression through which I incorporate the same light, shadow and realistic perspective used by artists in other media, but without the use of paint, dyes or other surface treatments. Instead I use the ordinary quilter’s tools of commercial fabric and thread. Rather than relying upon templates or photo projections, I prefer to work directly, gradually building a composition in the same manner as a painter working on a canvas. All pieces are cut free-hand from fabric with scissors or rotary cutter and machine appliquéd. My work has been exhibited in many venues throughout the United States including the American Folk Art Museum in New York and the Smithsonian Anacostia Museum as well as abroad in Madrid, France and Namibia.
