Alan Shields

Alan Shields’ outlook has been defined as the breaking down of traditional boundaries. His interest in grid systems is a constant element in his art. Shields uses in a variety of techniques in the production of his colorful works, including serigraph, relief, embossing, sewing, and perforation. He is perhaps best known for his handmade papers and his works on paper.

Recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1973, Shields has exhibited his work extensively in the United States and throughout the world. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Museum of Modern Art.
