Considered one of the most significant figurative painters working in contemporary art, Kerry James Marshall combines technical virtuosity and a sophisticated understanding of art history to create layered, impactful, and pictorially complex portrayals of the African American experience. In so doing, he strives to “reclaim the images of Blackness as an emblem of power, instead of…derision.” Marshall carefully renders his subjects in a varied mixture of black hues, demonstrating the full chromatic possibility of the color and, by extension, the richness of Black culture and history.
