Veronique Leriche Fischetti’s dazzling sequin flags come out of the Haitian sacred banner tradition, drapo Vodou. Unfurled at the beginning of a ceremony, the flags invite practitioners todepart secular life and enter the sacred realm. Since the 1940’s, the medium has been embraced by talented Haitian artisans and brought into popular consciousness. Fischetti, who immigrated to the United States from Haiti in 1997, layers her surfaces with mirrors, metals, glass, beads, lushly textured fabrics, and, of course, sequins. Although she is influenced by the art of her homeland, Fischetti has developed her work and her life into a broader palette by familiarizing herself with the dynamic array of contemporary artists she has encountered during her stay in New York. Fischetti’s work has been included in various exhibitions including Voudou Riche at Columbia College in Chicago, Illinois and The Spiritual in Art at the Islip Art Museum in East Islip, New York.
