Leonardo Drew

Leonardo Drew’s sculpture yields a contradiction between an underlying, restrained order based on a grid and chaotic, decayed found objects covering the surface. Drew’s work is frequently interpreted as exploration of his African-American identity. Cotton bales, canvas bags and ropes evoke black life under slavery, while urban debris recovered from city streets alludes to contemporary life in blighted urban areas. Drew has shown work at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC; Finesilver Gallery in Houston Texas; Mary Boone Gallery in New York.
